In collaboration with Princess Nahienaena School, the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset announces the “Computers for Kids Project.” The club learned that Princess Nahienaena School is a Title I School and many students do not have access to a computer in their homes. Working with the club’s Community Service Chairs, Sara Foley and Katie Zimmerman, and the skills and expertise of George Gordon, “The Computer Guru,” the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset has set the goal of providing 90 refurbished computers for these families. Any laptop, desktop or tablet can be donated and Gordon has generously offered to “wipe clean, sanitize and update” these devices to make them “school ready” for distribution. According to Joanne Laird, Past President and coordinator of this project: “We are very sure that our Maui community members will rise to this challenge of donating 90 devices for these families by July 31st.” How to donate? Devices can be dropped off at Moku Roots Restaurant located in the Lahaina Gateway Center between the hours of 10:30 am-3:00 pm any day of the week. It is encouraged that devices be taken to the restaurant in a brown paper bag. Since the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset Foundation holds a 501(c)(3) non-profit status, a form will be available upon drop off so that the person making the donation can receive a mahalo letter for tax purposes.
Please consider donating your “vintage” devices to support this program to get the needed technology into the hands of these families. Please contact Joanne Laird if you have additional questions – otherwise, Moku Roots is ready to receive your device donations (and this is an award-winning restaurant as well – ono food!). Joanne can be reached at: mamalrd01@gmail.com or via cell at 808-757-0981. Let’s help make “90 devices the New Norm!!”
The three West Maui Rotary clubs immediately sprang into action in order to provide food and support to families and local businesses affected by the COVID-19 virus pandemic. Boards of Directors of the three clubs met virtually to hammer out programs to help our local community members and their families. The Rotary Club of Lahaina in cooperation with Sysco is donating $4000 in wholesale fresh produce (4400lbs.!), refrigerated, and frozen items to be donated to needy families via The Maui Food Bank. Since the Maui Food Bank does not have storage for perishable items, Sysco is working with the club to keep these items in storage in their facilities until time of distribution.
The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise is making a $1000 donation to the Maui Food Bank. Additionally, this club is purchasing 80-$25 gift cards from locally owned Island Grocery Depot to be distributed to West Mauians who have lost work due to the coronavirus crisis. Additionally, several members have personally contributed extra cards, beyond the 80. These will be distributed (mailed to recipients) over the next four weeks. If the situation continues beyond that time, the club will continue the program.
The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset is working with Dr. Rebecca Winkie, principal at Princess Nahienaena School, to help students and families in need who attend her school. This club has purchased 40-$25 gift certificates at two locally owned food establishments that are remaining open for take-out orders. Moku Roots located in the Lahaina Gateway Center and CJ’s Deli located in the Fairway Shops each received $1000 to provide the gift certificates. $1000 in $25 gift cards were also purchased by the club at Foodland. These 120 gift cards and certificates were presented to Dr. Winkie on Thursday March 26 th for distribution. Additionally Marilyn Jorgensen, co-owner of CJs Deli, in collaboration with Dr.Winkie, invited families to her place of business to pick up surplus milk, eggs, and other produce that was donated by Sysco. To quote Dr. Winkie: "To witness the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset's compassionate support for our community is both humbling and heartwarming. Their beyond-generous donation of meals by way of gift cards is truly a blessing during these trying economic times, and I applaud their efforts to assist the students, families and local businesses of Lahaina."e; This club also made financial contributions to the following agencies to support local needs during these times of the COVID-19 pandemic: Maui Food Bank, $1000; Salvation Army, $500; and Maui Rescue Mission, $200.
All three of the West Maui Rotary Clubs will continue efforts to raise funds to support future projects to assist families in need due to the COVID-19 crisis. Two of the clubs hold 501(c)(3) status and all contributions for future support programs are tax deductible. We have an active Interact Club at the H. P. Baldwin High School and they held an event recently at the new Safeway store on Ho’okele Street, to provide information about donations to the Food Bank. Tank you Scil for supporting them! Tey also held a Bingo Night at the Hale Makua campus that is on Mill Street. Teir next event will be held on November 30th in the Multi Purpose Building at Baldwin from 5:00pm to 8:00pm and is a social event to bring together members of the other Interact Clubs on the island.

Saturday, March 23, 2019 – THE MAUI NEWS By SARAH RUPPENTHAL
Not sure what to do with that rusty old lawn mower or the broken TV that’s been collecting dust in your garage? Go ahead and mark Saturday, April 20 on your calendar. That’s when the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset and Malama Maui Nui will be collecting electronic waste (colloquially referred to as e-waste) in the Lahaina Cannery Mall parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.
In 2015, the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset joined forces with Malama Maui Nui (a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that empowers residents to work together to keep Maui County clean, safe and healthy) to organize the monthly “Go Green Recycle Third Saturday” event at the Lahaina Cannery Mall. Among the volunteers who gather in the mall’s parking lot bright and early to help residents responsibly dispose of e-waste is Nancy Montoya of KW Island Living. Every month, Montoya and her fellow Rotarians collect all types of e-waste — everything from air-conditioners to Realtor helps keep West Maui clean and green The Voice of Real Estate on Maui ■ Do you know a Realtors Association of Maui member who should be recognized for their contributions to the community? If so, send your story idea to Sarah Ruppenthal at missruppenthal@gmail.com. computers to water heaters — on a first-come, first-served basis and at no charge (there are no redemption fees for any items). Supported by the County of Maui and 5A RentA-Space, the free e-cycling event has been well-received by the community and has curbed illegal dumping in the area. “We collect an average of 12 tons a month, 144 tons a year and we just passed 500 tons overall,” Montoya said. “We are happy to report we are one of the cleanest towns in the county.” Montoya has been a Rotarian for nearly two decades and joined the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset five years ago. “I wanted to give back to the community and attended a club meeting,” she said. “I immediately liked the people and the Rotary Four-Way Test, which reads: ‘Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? And … is it fun?’ The time worked best for me, and the founding leaders, Jim Fahnestock and Liz May, are awesome people.” Other Realtors Association of Maui members on the club’s roster include Heidi Dollinger of Island Sotheby’s International Realty, who currently serves as the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s 2018-19 president; Katie Zimmerman of KW Island Living; and Kyoko Wills of Old Republic Title. The club’s mission is to enhance the quality of life in West Maui and beyond by engaging in meaningful, achievable projects within Rotary International’s five avenues of service: club service, community service, international service, vocational service and youth service. “We do good work with good friends while having RAM member Nancy Montoya is also a member of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset, which will host its monthly “Go Green Recycle Third Saturday” e-cycling event at the Lahaina Cannery Mall parking lot on Saturday, April 20 from 9 a.m. to noon. good fun,” Montoya said. The Go Green Recycle Third Saturday event is one of several community service projects sponsored by the club. Among other things, its members have collected school supplies for Hana High & Elementary School students, raised money for academic scholarships, and recently took part in the installation of rescue tube (cylindrical flotation devices used to stabilize distressed swimmers) stations on West Maui beaches. “Rotary is a service organization made up of business people looking to help improve our community,” Montoya explained. “We are open to ideas of improvement from our local community.” The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset meets at the Royal Lahaina Resort’s Royal Ocean Terrace Restaurant & Lounge on the first, third and fifth Tuesday of every month. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., followed by a meeting (usually headlined by a guest speaker) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Montoya says guests are always welcome to attend.
