Rotary Youth Exchange empowers young leaders by immersing them in new cultures, fostering global understanding, and developing leadership skills. Sponsored by Rotary clubs in over 100 countries, this life-changing program is available to students ages 15-19.

Program Overview

Rotary Youth Exchange offers students the chance to:
  • Develop lifelong leadership skills
  • Learn a new language and culture
  • Build lasting friendships across the globe
  • Gain a global perspective and become a global citizen

Exchange Types

  1. Long-Term Exchange:
    • Duration: Full academic year (August–June).
    • Students attend local schools and live with 2-3 well-vetted host families.
    • Cost: $7,000 (includes airfare, insurance, school fees, room, and board).
  2. Short-Term Exchange:
    • Duration: Several days to three months (typically during school breaks).
    • Currently unavailable in District 5000.

For Students Interested in Becoming Exchange Participants

Eligibility

  • Ages 15–18 ½ (some countries have narrower age requirements).
  • Open to children of Rotarians and non-Rotarians.
  • Applicants should demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership skills, and cultural adaptability.

How to Apply

  1. Find a Sponsoring Club: Contact your nearest Rotary club.
  2. Start Your Application: Once sponsored, begin the application process here.
  3. Interview and Final Review: Participate in interviews at both the club and district levels.
  4. Submit Required Documents: Complete forms, including passport copy and deposit.
Application Deadline: Mid-December (early applications have better placement opportunities).

Steps to Sponsor a Student

  1. Appoint a Club Youth Exchange Officer (YEO).
  2. Engage the Community: Promote the program at schools, events, and community gatherings.
  3. Conduct Interviews: Vet student applicants and their families.
  4. Provide Support: Assign a counselor to the student for their exchange journey.

Inbound Students

Hosting an exchange student enriches your club and community. Clubs must:

  • Identify host families (2–3 per year).
  • Engage the student in Rotary and local activities.
