Josh the Baby Otter - From the website: Josh the Otter Water Safety & Awareness Project  Our goal is to educate children with a fun and simple message:  TO STAY AWAY FROM WATER UNLESS ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT. “Josh the Baby Otter” was created to help children comprehend and remember this important message. Ultimately, we want to create a water safety behavior for all children that will be passed on from generation to generation. We have already distributed several thousand copies of the book to day cares, preschools, and kindergarten classrooms across the country. With ongoing support, we will continue our efforts to incorporate this life saving message into every educational curriculum in the United States and beyond. We believe the book; “Josh the Baby Otter” has and will continue to save countless children’s lives.

The Every School a Star literacy kit is designed to help Rotary clubs and reading councils select and implement projects that meet the literacy needs of schools in their communities and around the world. You’ll find examples of successful literacy projects along with contact information, resources, and service opportunities. You’ll also find tools, such as questionnaires and a teachers’ wish list, to help you determine the right project for your community. Whether it’s volunteering your time, providing financial support, or building awareness of literacy’s importance, schools need your support and involvement. What’s more, literacy projects are affordable, attainable, and successful. Working together, Rotarians and IRA members can make their school a shining star.

BETWEEN THE LIONS, a new PBS television series for children ages 4–7, is named for a family of lions—Theo, Cleo, Lionel, and Leona—who run a library like no other. The doors “between the lions” swing open to reveal a magical place where characters pop off the pages of books, vowels sing, and words take on a life of their own. The series combines state-of-the-art puppetry, animation, live action, and music to achieve its mission of helping young children learn to read. BETWEEN THE LIONS uses a comprehensive literacy curriculum geared to beginning readers. The curriculum, developed with reading and literacy experts from across the country, emphasizes both the pleasures and value of reading (the “whole”) as well as the skills needed for learning how to read (the “parts”). This “whole-part-whole” approach, combining whole language and phonics, helps to transform the sometimes confusing process of learning to read into an entertaining adventure for children and their families.
